I LOVED reading your article here and perusing the photos. They were so warm and vibrant and I went on a miniature mind-vacation! :)

You really capture the energy and spirit of the places you travel to. My husband and I took our kids on a vacation in March to St. Croix and loved the island. We stayed at "The Buccaneer" - highly recommend if you're ever looking to travel to that area. :) They have great childcare there too, so we were able to "honeymoon" in the mornings and be with our children for the afternoons/evenings.

aww thank you so much! I'm always looking for a mind-vacation, too.

my husband used to mention wanting to visit St Croix - and we never have! I am taking this as a sign. I'll check out The Buccaneer, too. Whenever we throw a little childcare in the mix (like the ski school / babysitters combo to get us some ski dates!) it's money well spent. Appreciate the rec!

Wow! Thank you for sharing your experiences and your beautiful photos! I, too, am an Airbnb lover and love the reminder to go off the beaten path. Exploring local food and culture, eating simply, enjoying the new surroundings are all up my alley. I truly appreciate your tips and you have given me lots to consider (especially flexibility in flights, how to source food inexpensively, and waiting to plan side excursions). Can’t wait to continue to follow your adventures and plan my own!

My childhood dream was always to live in a hotel (not that I'm older I'm also not sure why). But scratch that and make it AirBnBs! Depending on the month, some AirBnBs in Milan are cheaper than the rent of actual homes of similar size. (But alas, bureaucracy doesn't appreciate permanent AirBnB hoppers.)

you know, i feel like I had a similar childhood dream. i think it was the novelty of the hotel. i was always so excited about them!

Wow. Those Airbnbs really do look incredible. I love being able to stay in a fancy hotel but with kids, it’s been a bit of a no go in recent years! A good airbnb is the best or we’re trying out camping this summer for even cheaper options.

Love this round-up and these tips!! I'm still a big Airbnb fan (Aliza and I are actually running a feature on the last Airbnbs we've bookmarked next Thursday), and now I have a few more to add to my own wishlist.

Great post and photos — Bali looked especially dreamy! I totally agree with you that it's worth weighing your options, but I've also found that Airbnbs often do give me the chance to have a memorable, unique, and local experience that a hotel might not provide. I admit that I've even planned a couple trips around cool Airbnbs I found! :)

love that, kim! seems like we share a similar mindset in this regard. where did you travel to based on the cool Airbnbs?!

A cool cabin in New Hampshire and a trinity house in Philly (I'd wanted to visit Philly anyway, but finding the Airbnb helped me decide on my dates! :)).

Love this post! I have just booked a trip to Portugal with the fam (an 11pm overnight flight with a 3yo and a will be 10 month old on my lap am I crazy?!) I would have favored a seat for the baby- but it was too expensive!

I do love somewhat splurging on accommodations on vaca. I've done too many of the budget ones that always leave something to be desired. Waking up to a stellar view (usually the ocean) on vacation is something I want! However, I have gotten very lucky booking short term rentals that are new to the game and getting what I think is an insane deal (ie lower prices to attract renters as they have no reviews) and I have found them through instagram searches or by perusing google maps.

that is an EXCELLENT tip about new-to-the-rental market homes to get a good deal. even though they have no reviews you can still connect with the owner or agent and feel really good about your booking!

when it comes to saving, lap infant status it can't be beat. Once you get to Lisbon everyone can take a long nap, and then stay out late for dinner!
