You said the loves list was in no particular order but you def nailed the top 5 ✨
I could have spent all day in the Albertina and I haven’t bought a white wine that isn’t grutliner (this is what I call it now lol) since our return ❤️
Love this list! More Grüner Veltliner for everyone! And interesting to read your take on the opera. We did the standing tickets and wondered if we would have loved it more if we were seated, but the experience sounds similar!
I appreciate you sharing your view on the opera! We went in with the highest of expectations so, there’s that. I definitely liked having seats and did enjoy parts of the first act!
Long list is endless !! Going to Marseille next month - we have a family holiday house just north of Avignon and we always have a night in Marseille before driving up from the airport - love Marseille and all it's melting potness ! The problem - not a problem obviously ! with having a holiday home is we only tend to go there ! Am definitely going to make an effort to get to Budapest in the next 12 months taking your recommendations with me ! Actually also we are going to Rome in October, husband and daughter are big Pink Floyd fans and one of them (Dave Gilmour ?) is playing so I will go along to carry luggage ! Never been to Rome so that will be something to look forward to ! Happy Friday !
a family home in Avignon - what a dream!! we have one in the green mountains of Vermont if you ever want to house swap ;) so I get what you mean when you remark about always going to the one spot. I hope you love Budapest as much as I did. Rome in October should be pretty magical! before substack I blogged and i have lots of rome over there. Thanks so much for the Vienna low down and for taking us with you - I went there about 35 years ago(!) and remember being very underwhelmed at the time, for whatever reasons I can't actually remember ! but shall definitely put back on my Europe "long list" - really, really love your writing and the pics are wonderful ! xx
Thank you, Caroline! Hopefully 35 years has changed the city for the better and you can experience it in a new light if you ever get back. (The Europe “long list” is pretty long, I bet!) Do you have any upcoming trips?!
I love reading your pieces about all these amazing places and eats. Sounds like a busy time in Vienna between the art, history, opera and restaurants. Did you spend much time at cafes? I remember being super inspired creatively by the cafe culture of Vienna!
So we stayed in an Air BnB which I remember was really cool and then for cafes I only remember Cafe Central, which maybe is a little touristy, but I remember it was beautiful and I was so inspired that I wrote a poem on a napkin while I was there. I just wanted to create. 🤣
This looks like such a gorgeous trip. That egg and pasta dish definitely looks like a bust. I'm coveting that sold out Clare V. t, and I am thiiiinking about the Lichtenstein quote which I haven't thoroughly made sense of (in a good way!). Much to ponder. Xx
such a bust on that dish, you should have seen our faces when it was served!! When dishes are that bad it makes me laugh, like ohhh this isn't a hard part of life, so it's laughable as I post about it.
sorry the tee is sold out - I just updated my link to the sweatshirt which I might also need.
and his quote very much made my head spin as I tried way too hard to interpret it...
Vienna is the most underrated Europe destination! I fell in love when I went for the first time in my early 20s (budget travel) and then fell over heels when I went with more disposable income and could explore a bit more on the gastronomy and cultural side. In either case I'm still chasing the street Sausage + Wiener Schnitzel high! :)
Loving the recap! Stunning photos
Why thank you. So happy my top paid subscriber has finally received an email.
Such a fun recap — loled at “you shouldn’t be charging Michelin prices at your bistro.”
haha. thanks my dear!
Loved this recap so much! Will def be subscribing for more
Hi Atlas! Thank you so much. Thrilled to have you!

That is a great point. Though Birdyard might needs to be higher if that’s the case. 😉
Cheers to drinking alll the Grütliner!!!

A fellow Grüner lover!!

Vienna is my favourite city in the world! Love your list/recap!
Well that means so much coming from you!! Thank you, Ingrid!

Thanks Leah! Honestly - no, we did not spend much time at cafes, though I would have loved to!
Where did you stay and which ones did you visit?!

I love being inspired by places like that. If I ever get back I’ll be sure to visit that cafe.
I love a Negroni spagliato 🙌🏻 enjoyed this visual tour as a little lunch time escape 🙂
so good. the 🍾 hits the spot!

street sausage + weiner schnitzel high - that made my day! I love hearing about how others experienced the city, especially over multiple visits.
